We are delighted to inform you that we have merged ASHRAE UK Midlands and London Chapter to create the new ASHRAE UK Chapter. This exciting development brings together the collective expertise and knowledge of our members, providing a platform to share ideas and promote best practices in the HVAC&R industry.

To celebrate the launch of the ASHRAE UK Chapter, we are organizing a special event on June 16, at West Park Loughborough University. We are honored to have the presence of ASHRAE President, Farooq Mehboob, who will join us for the launch.

Farooq Mehboob

ASHRAE President

We are honored to have the presence of ASHRAE President, Farooq Mehboob, who will join us for the launch.

We would like to extend our invitation to you to attend the launch event as our guest, completely free of charge. This is a great opportunity for you to connect with other members, share your experiences, and learn about the latest trends and innovations in the industry. You will also have the chance to take photos with the ASHRAE president and the Director and Regional Chair DRC of European Region XIV.

To confirm your attendance, please register through the link provided below. We look forward to seeing you at the event and celebrating this momentous occasion together.

Program

The event will start with a welcome and reception at 2:30 PM, followed by an exhibition, networking opportunities, and net zero presentations from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The launch and student branches segment will start from 5:00 PM and conclude at 5:30 PM.

ASHRAE New Global Headquarters – Case study on analysis of timing for achieving zero cumulative emissions

This case study is an abbreviated digest of an extensive work by ASHRAE on retrofitting its new headquarters, which was opened on 18th November 2021. Whilst most of the information in this case study has been generously provided by ASHRAE and considering that several case studies of this building have been previously published elsewhere, the main contribution of this case study is in the analysis of timing for achieving zero cumulative emissions, combined from embodied and operational emissions. The case study introduces the design concept, the climate, the site, the building before and after the retrofit, thermal insulation, solar gain, solar shading, natural daylight, ventilation heating and cooling, and renewable energy generation and consumption. Embodied emissions were calculated using OneClickLCA and operational emissions were calculated using information from the budling performance dashboard. The application of the Zero Equation, considering the net export of energy from the PV system and the replacement of the emissions prior to retrofit, provides information about timing when zero cumulative emissions will be achieved. It was found that in the worst-case scenario the ASHRAE New Global Headquarters will achieve zero cumulative emissions in 5.7 years, and in the best-case scenario in 1.4 years after the completion of retrofit in 2021.

Acknowledgements: The case study has been prepared with both technical information and a written consent provided by ASHRAE. Embodied emissions in building materials were derived from a simulation model provided with written consent from Integrated Environmental Solutions Ltd. All support in the preparation of this case study is gratefully acknowledged.

Decarbonising Heat

About the speaker:

Joel is a passionate engineer and sustainability consultant determined to be a contributor to global sustainable development solutions.  His career has been intentionally tailored to provide a deep understanding of practical technical solutions and delivery models for sustainability, decarbonisation and Net Zero.

He currently works for Hermetica Black who provide specialist support in the investment, development and asset management of energy projects.

He chairs the advisory board for GreenSCIES (Green Smart Community Integrated Energy Systems) as well as supporting research and development projects through advisory board membership, presenting at various conferences and various outreach programs.

He previously worked as a heat network specialist in The Department of Energy Security and Net Zero part of the UK Central Government Civil Service. In this role he acts as the technical lead for the Heat Network Delivery Unit (HNDU) as well as leading the development of several heat network projects across England and Wales. He lead on the accessing waste heat work streams and the heat network sector resilience workstream.

Prior to this he worked at Bouygues Energies and Services, part of the €37 Billion turnover Bouygues Group managing the financial risk of a circa £30m energy performance contracting portfolio. Prior to this he worked at Cotopaxi Limited as an industrial energy consultant, E.On in pollution monitoring from coal power stations and Inmarsat, a global satellite company supporting their resilience tools by mapping their networks on Earth.

He holds a PhD in utilising waste heat for absorption refrigeration in the context of rural renewable power plants in developing countries and a masters in a mechanical engineering.

End of Gas

About the speaker:

Aaron is Professor of Building Decarbonisation and Director of the BSRIA LSBU Net Zero Building Centre.  His research centres on the links between the technical and policy challenges in decarbonising existing buildings.  He has led a number of research and demonstration projects for low carbon innovations in heat pumps and heat networks.  His interests also include retrofit programme design and market transformation strategy.

Decarbonisation of existing systems through the use of heat pumps

About the speaker:

With a marine engineering background, Mark has over 35 years of experience in the commercial heating industry. He has an in-depth and rounded out knowledge of heating systems, from heat pumps and hybrid systems to CHP, condensing boilers and heat networks. His experience is relevant to anybody working across domestic and commercial installations, especially those with a passion for decarbonisation and net zero.

Mark has delivered a range of CPD modules to top consultant practices and wider audiences across the UK. In addition to delivering CPD, Mark also trains consultants and specifiers on the Hybrid System Wizard; a free software tool that helps consultants and specifiers to decarbonise their projects.
