Keynote 1: Aligning Health, Environmental, and Justice Co-benefits in UK Buildings

Bio: Dr Douglas Booker is an environmental social scientist and entrepreneur, with a focus on indoor air quality and environmental justice. Douglas is a Lecturer in Indoor Air at the University of Leeds where he delivers research and teaching on the physical and social dimensions of indoor air quality. In his role at the University of Leeds, Douglas is involved in several large research projects focused on the impact of energy retrofit on indoor environmental quality, including leading the HESTIA Network which is co-creating a new health-equity-centred engineering approach to home design and retrofit, integrating existing and emerging building technologies to maximise human and environmental health co-benefits, and minimise health inequalities.
Alongside his Lectureship, Douglas runs NAQTS, a Lancaster Environment Centre collocated business that develops tools and technologies to provide holistic indoor air quality information. Douglas is also a UKRI Regional Clean Air Champion as part of the SPF Clean Air Programme, a £42.5m investment supporting research and innovation. In this role he helps to bring together research across engineering, atmospheric, medical, and social science to develop practical and fair solutions for air quality challenges.
Keynote 2: Home energy efficiency, ventilation and health

Speaker Bio
Dr James Milner is Associate Professor in Climate Change, Environment and Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He leads a team of researchers focusing on the public health impacts of environmental interventions and policies, with a particular interest in climate change mitigation in the urban and built environments. He currently has leading roles on research projects funded by the Wellcome Trust, UKRI, NIHR and the EC. He is also an Associate Member of the UK Government’s advisory Committee On the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants (COMEAP) and contributes to the Lancet Countdown, which is tracking progress on climate change and health.
