Webinar: Refrigeration System Hazards and Safety System Requirements

July 4 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

This webinar explores the key hazards associated with different types of refrigerants and the safety systems required to manage those risks in commercial and industrial refrigeration applications. Refrigerant selection is influenced by factors such as cost, direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 & 2), and inherent safety risks. For example, while toxic refrigerants like ammonia are unsuitable for domestic use, flammable refrigerants have been deemed acceptable. In systems with larger refrigerant charges, careful design and the inclusion of robust safety measures become critical. The session will examine the characteristics of commonly used refrigerants, assess the associated hazards such as toxicity, flammability, and high pressure and outline the engineering controls and regulatory requirements that help ensure safe operation.

About the Speaker

Dr Dermot Cotter CEng FInstR – Star Technical Solutions

With 35 years of experience in the refrigeration industry across a range of roles, he brings a wealth of technical and practical expertise. His main interests include designing more efficient refrigeration systems, heat decarbonisation, and diagnosing issues in faulty, inefficient, or unreliable equipment. He also has extensive knowledge of safety concerns related to ammonia, carbon dioxide, and flammable refrigerants. His work has been widely published, including numerous papers on refrigeration system safety and efficiency for the International Institute of Refrigeration.
